Reverse Ceiling Fans
Typically your ceiling fan is used to keep your room cool during the summer. But did you know that it can also help with keeping a room warm during the winter? All you have to do is switch the spinning direction.
Since warm air rises, a ceiling fan can help push that warm air back down to the ground. When the fan is moving in the “forward” direction (counter-clockwise) it pushes down cool air. But putting the fan on “reverse” (clockwise) on a low speed will gently draw up the warm air and push it back down, circling the warm air around the room.
“This helps to even out the room’s temperature and takes a load off the heating system,” says Atkinson. “It’s such a simple and effective way of optimizing the already-produced heat in rooms with particularly high ceilings.”

Use Foil Behind a Radiator
If you have a radiator attached to an external wall, use some aluminum foil behind the radiator. The reflective nature of the foil will prevent heat from disappearing through the wall and instead will reflect it back into the room.
This is especially effective for radiators on external walls, says Max Veggeberg, CEO and founder of Tetra. “However, for lasting results, it’s better to use specialized radiator reflector foil rather than kitchen foil, which can degrade over time. Either way, ensure proper installation to avoid obstructing airflow around the radiator, as this could reduce heating efficiency.”
While this method is generally safe, also make sure to install the foil without it actually touching the radiator or anything near it that cold overheat, says Atkinson. “This can be a simple trick to maximize your radiators for homes that might be older, without the capacity to have newer insulation installed around them,” he says.
