Do me a favor: Picture your current outdoor wall light. Is it coated in 10 years’ worth of spider webs and embarrassingly rusty in the corners? If you answered yes, it might be time to upgrade to something a little nicer. Enter the Possini Euro outdoor wall light. This mid-century modern fixture immediately caught my eye when I was scrolling the Lamps Plus website. Sleek black lines and a gold background with double Edison bulbs? I was so in.

But how was the assembly process (and how has the wall light held up in the past two months since installation)? I guess the only way for you to find out is to keep reading (cue evil laugh).

The Possini Euro outdoor wall light is exactly what the title implies: an outdoor wall light. This beauty is a sleek 22 inches tall and rectangular in shape. The outer shell of the light is made of durable steel with a textured black finish. And for a luxe touch, the back wall of the light is a rich gold color.

How We Tested It

Possini Euro Metropolis Black And Gold Outdoor Wall Light installation instructions

Naturally, I decided a beautiful Saturday morning was the right time to install this outdoor wall light. Now, to be clear, I’ve installed more than a few light fixtures and fans in my day. If you haven’t, Lamps Plus recommends you call a certified electrician to help.

If you install the light yourself, please remember to always turn off your main power supply to avoid electrocuting yourself. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

After turning off the circuit breaker, I went to work removing my pre-existing outdoor wall light (which had been on the outside of my townhouse since the Stone Ages) using a screwdriver. Once I successfully unscrewed the mounting bracket, it was time to unsheathe the wires by undoing the plastic end caps. Once you’ve done this, you should be able to easily separate the wires.

Installation Process

After my decrepit wall light was out, it was time to prep the Possini wall light. I carefully screwed in two 40-watt Edison bulbs (which are, unfortunately, not included), and got ready to add the first pane of glass. After you’ve aligned the glass to the framing around the bulbs, you’ll need to pinch the small bottom clips to keep it in place. Once you’ve done that, it’s time to install the mounting plate. They recommend you use a level to make sure it’s, ya know, level, but I didn’t. My light still turned out great, but you should probably actually level your mounting plate if you want to be sure.

If you’re confident the mounting plate is straight, it’s time to secure it with the included hex screws. Once that step is done, connect the proper wires to each other. You’ll then need to stuff them all into the outlet box, which can sometimes be a challenge to do without losing the wire’s connection. I recommend doing this step carefully and having someone else hold the light in place while you stuff the wires (so you don’t have to think about two things at once).

Finally, you’ll want to attach the inner frame to the outer piece using the included screws and gaskets. Now, it’s time to turn the power back on and admire your hard work. You did it!

FAQ

What is the best material for outdoor wall lights?

We recommend choosing an outdoor wall light made of a durable material, like steel, brass or copper. Regardless of which material you choose, make sure to keep the surface wiped down and clean (especially if you choose a stainless steel fixture). This is critical to prevent rust and damage from the elements.

What size exterior wall light do I need?

According to The Home Depot, exterior wall lights should be based on the size of the area it’ll be lighting. For example, if you’re putting lights near your garage door, measure the height of the door itself. From there, divide the measurement by either 1/4 or 1/3. The number you get is the general size your light fixture should be if you’d like it proportional to the space.

Final Verdict

Do I recommend the Possini Euro outdoor wall light? Yes, yes I do. If you want a wall light that looks way more expensive than it actually is, you’ll love this sleek option. And as long as you have previous experience with installing light fixtures, the assembly process shouldn’t be much of a hassle.
